Creating a Custom Service

We have developed a process that results in a Bar or Bat Mitzvah service that is personal and customized for each family. The process begins at the first meeting, when we get together with the family to hear their vision for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah, and discuss our approach and philosophy. At that meeting we explain the components of the service, begin to gauge the amount of tutoring that may be needed, show the family examples of previous custom prayer books, and discuss the family’s plan for the venue. The goal of the meeting is to ensure that we understand the family’s values, and agree on a plan.

After this meeting, we set the schedule for tutoring. Typically, Shirona will meet with the student weekly for a period beginning approximately 9-12 months prior to the Bar or Bat Mitzvah. During this period, Alan will also meet with the student to review the Torah portion, and develop a D’var Torah (sermon). In order to more fully understand and prepare for the service, we encourage the family to attend Shabbat morning services together at a nearby synagogue at least twice during this time.

We meet with the family several more times prior to the Bar or Bat Mitzvah to review the order of the prayer service, assign individuals alyiot (Torah reading blessings) and other honors, and then finally rehearse the actual service. We work with families to ensure that all the necessary components for a prayer service are brought together at the venue of choice, and we will supply a kosher Torah scroll.

Our approach is to prepare each student according to his or her abilities, and develop a service that is in accordance with the comfort level, individual styles, personalities, and traditions of the family.
